This is a letter my cousine wrote to the Registrar about a problem she is facing since the very beginning of this academic year at the UoM. A copy of the letter was handed to one of SU’s member at the SU’s office, of course and the answer was :’Nu pa kpav fer nanien!’ But who exactly said that, I need to find out.

Madam,
Refusal to pay Rs 300 for correct Student Bus Pass

I, *Name*, *StudentID*, from BSc. Medical Science Year 1 am having a problem regarding my Student Bus Pass.

During application time I was staying at Royal Road Vallee Des Pretres. However soon after, I moved to Cadillac Street, L’Agrement, St Pierre. On the 10th of June 2008, upon registration, I informed the person who was checking my forms. After asking his colleagues he gave me new forms including my student ID to fill with my new address, he also changed the address in the forms with him. He then tore the other forms. I was strictly told that writing a letter, to inform about the change, was not needed.

On the orientation day 6th of August 2008, I got my pass with my old address written on it. I immediately informed the receptionist about the error in my pass. She went inside and after a few minutes she came and told me that she agreed there was a mistake and that my new pass will be sent through my class representative.

Since class representative did not get any reply, on the 9th of September 2008 we went to Admissions and student Records Office, Ground Floor, Engineering Tower. There I was asked to pay Rs. 300 for my new pass. I refused to pay because I informed them on the 10th June. I was coldly told by the one in charge of the office that I was 1 month late in informing them about the change in address and that until I do not pay rs.300 I will not get my correct bus pass. However on my pass it is written FOS, which means that it was AFTER registration that they knew I am in the Faculty of Science. It was on the day of registration that I informed them, so it is totally untrue that I am late.

This is why I do not agree to pay the sum of Rs. 300.Another student who paid for a course on the 11th of June in the faulty of law and management changed for one in FOS on the 23 June got his bus pass on time with his new faculty’s name mentioned on the pass. Hence I cannot be accused of being late.

I hope you can do the necessary for me at your earliest convenience. I will also much appreciate if I could get an answer the soonest possible as I have to pay the bus fare everyday while coming to university.

With heartfelt thanks

Yours faithfully

Given the SU person said he/she can’t do a thing about it, the gal went to pay the Rs. 300 for a new bus pass. Now my fellow blog readers, what are your views about this? Was it fair on behalf of university administration and SU?

That’s why on Priscus Former’s blog, I stated that I need to know about my rights as a UoM student to know where I stand and where the Admin and SU people stand.

Were we right to fight against the payment of Rs. 300?

P.S: 1) Names and ID were removed from the letter to avoid problems.
2) I guarantee that whatever is written in the letter is true, because I was present.

Awaiting you replies and arguments.

With Thanks,

Cheers,

Chaya
